Class:Antidote

Indications

Acute iron poisoning,hemochromatoses.aluminum overload in dialysis patients.

Precautions

Impaired renal function,pregnancy,lactation,performe eye and hearing test on long term therapy.May produce seizures in patients with aluminum related encephalopathy pretreat with clonazepam.

Side effects

Shock with rapid injection,rarely allergic reactions,cardiovascular,neurological and gastrointestinal disturbances.urine in red colour.retinal and lens changes.leg cramps,hepatic and renal dysfunction.blood dyscrasias.

Drug interaction

Prochlorperazine,erythropoietin.

Dosage

Adults and children:acute iron poisoning:2gm diluted in 2-3 ml given by IM.,then gastric lavage and followed by 5gm in 50-100ml orally.
