Mechanism of action
Sodium picosulphate
is a contact laxative,which acts on the colonic mucosa by stimulating
development of physiologic peristaltic movement of the large intestine.
Indications
All forms of
constipation.pre and post operatively.Relief of evacuation in painful conditions
such as hemorrhoids.preparation for barium enema.preparation of colon for
proctosigmoidoscopy.
Contraindications
Patients with
ileus,intestinal obstruction,acute surgical abdominal conditions and in severe
dehydration.Known hypersensitivity to substances of triarylmethane group.
Precautions
Sodium picosulphate
should not be given to patients with intestinal obstruction or with undiagnosed
abdominal symptoms:care should be taken inpatients with inflammatory bowel
disease.Prolonged use should also be avoided.
Side effects
Sodium picosulphate
may cause abdominal discomfort such as colic.Prolonged use or over dosage can
result in diarrhea with excessive loss of water and electrolytes,particularly
potassium.There is also the possibility of developing an atonic nonfunctioning
colon.
Dosage
Adults:1-2 tablets or
10-15 drops once daily.Children:aged 2 to 5 years,1/2 tablet or 2-3 drops once
daily.Aged:6-10 years,1 tablet or 2-5 drops once daily.
