Class:Anti-Acne Preparation

Mechanism of action

Sebostatic:Benzoyl peroxide has sebostatic action.Due to which it reduces the extensive sebum production and controls its secretion.Keratolytic:Benzoyl peroxide possess the keratolytic activity.In this way it counteracts with the hyperkeratinization associated the acne vulgaris.Anti bacterial:Benzoyl peroxide has anti bacterial like activity against P-acnes bacteria.This anti bacterial activity is because of the release of free oxygen radicals from benzoyl peroxide when it acts on the skin.These radicals then kill the bacteria.The gel present in it also possesses anti inflammatory and anti pruritic activities.

Indications

Mild to moderate acne vulgaris consisting of black heads,white heads and spots.Severe acne.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to benzoyl peroxide.

Side effects

As it contains the gel base in which 5% and 10% of BPO is present,when it is applied on to the skin.After some times it leave the benzoyl crystals on the skin causing hot spots of particular irritation.Mild burning.Moderate reddening and peeling of skin.

Pregnancy and lactation

Benzoyl peroxide gel usage in pregnancy is not developed.It depends upon the doctors that they can prescribe these patients by weighing risks against the benefits.Benzoyl peroxide can pass through the breast milk.So it can be given to the patients with caution during lactation.

Drug interactions

Benzoyl peroxide should not be used with the drugs like tretinoin,resorcinol,salicylic acid and other skin peeling agent other wise it can cause burning or irritation.

Dosage

Do not rub.Apply 1-2 hours for the first 2 days and then wash,after that apply 3-4 hours for another 2-3 days then wash,then continue the treatment.Duration of treatment is 3 months.Frequency of use should be adjusted to obtain the desired clinical response.Washing with soap(Acne aid bar) and water prior to application greatly enhances the efficacy of the preparation.
