Isoniazid

Class:Antibiotics,AntiTtuberculosis

Mechanism of action

Uknown,but may include the inhibition of mycolic acid synthesis resulting in disruption of the bacterial cell wall.

Indication

Susceptible tuberculosis infections and prophylactically to those individuals exposed to tuberculosis.

Contraindications

Acute liver disease;hypersensitivity to isoniazid or any component;previous history of hepatic damage during isoniazid therapy.

Side effects

Loss of appetite,nausea,vomiting.stomach pain,mild increased LFTs,weakness,peripheral neuropathy

(dose related incidence,with 10mg/kg/day).

Dosage

Infants and children:prophylaxis:10mg/kg/day in 1-2 divided doses (maximum 300mg/day) 6 months in patients who donot have HIV infection and 12 months in patients who have HIV infection. Adults:prophylaxis: 300mg/day for  6 months in patients who donot have HIV infection and 12 months in patients who have HIV infection.
